A 20-year-old Mildura man is facing serious criminal charges after leading police on a chase that ended in a crash on the Calder Freeway at Kyneton last Friday night.

The man evaded police for a traffic offence before driving down the wrong side of the freeway – heading south in the north-bound lanes – when he collided head-on with another car between Burton Avenue and the Mollison Street overpass at about 9.20pm.

Police arrived shortly after and the male offender was arrested at the scene.

Both he and the other driver – a male from Kangaroo Flat – were taken by ambulance to Royal Melbourne Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The northbound lanes of the freeway were closed for three to four hours.

The offending driver was kept under police guard before being released from hospital on the Saturday afternoon. He was taken into custody, interviewed and remanded at Melbourne West Police Station.

He has been charged with serious driving and criminal offences and will appear in court today, May 12.

Anyone with information or CCTV footage is asked to contact Peter Wall at the Macedon Ranges Highway Patrol on 5421 2999.
