There are two big drawcard football matches ahead in the Riddell League this Saturday, with Kyneton at home to Diggers Rest, and Macedon welcoming a rampaging Wallan.

This follows the completion of round 7, with the only surprise being Macedon’s narrow defeat in a low-scoring encounter against ninth-placed Melton South.

The costly 9.10 (64) to 8.13 (61) loss for the Cats came a week after they had outclassed Romsey by 63 points.

At the Showgrounds, fourth-placed Kyneton took control in the third quarter against a competitive Romsey to eventually win 14.13 (97) to 11.3 (69).

Romsey scored 7.1 in the first half to trail by four points, and the Tigers lifted their game to have numerous scoring opportunities in the third term.

Indy Williamson finished with four goals for a Kyneton side well served by Jacob Grinter, Ethan Turner and James O’Sullivan in particular.

Kyneton’s depth is going to be important as the season progresses.

Corey Pertzel, Sam Wilson, Nathan Hoy and Jack Jedwab (four goals) were named as Romsey’s best.

The Tigers now face a strong Diggers Rest lineup hit hard by injuries, with the outcome of this match vital for both sides.

The Govan brothers and Jason Cooke (four goals) were in good form for Macedon, but the Cats could not develop the consistency needed to get on top of a resilient Melton South.

In the end, only 17 goals were scored, with the home side hanging on to win by three points in a desperate last quarter.

Gisborne Giants were stunned by a visiting Wallan side that kicked 10 goals straight in the first quarter; by half-time the margin in favour of the visitors was 67 points.

Growing in confidence, the Magpies had a match winner in Dion Hill, who finished with nine goals.

Final scores were 27.12 (174) to 12.7 (79).

Josh Lee, Mitchell Bongiovanni and Oscar Schnoor were best for a Giants’ side coming to terms with some of the strong opposition across the league.

Reigning premiers Riddell are purring along in fifth place, and came to Gilbert Gordon Oval showing some real attacking teamwork to lead Woodend-Hesket by seven goals at half-time.

Final scores were 17.11 (114) to 10.12 (72).

Matt Panuccio turned in his best game for the year for the Bombers, Zac Saad kept up his scoring average with five goals, and big recruit ruckman Mark Kovacevic continues to settle in at Bomberland.
