The newly opened Campaspe Mill Gallery will launch its exhibition program with Landscape by the Painter, a new collection of works by Kyneton artist Daniel Butterworth.
Opening on July 4 and running for three months, the exhibition will feature between 30 and 40 works, all available for purchase, with free entry for visitors. As part of the exhibition, Daniel will also undertake an artist residency, giving visitors the opportunity to watch him create his artwork firsthand.
Gallery owners Helen and Bill Coleby have long envisioned the Mill as a space dedicated to art and community. Having both been involved in the arts throughout their lives, transforming the Mill into a gallery was always part of the plan.
“We wanted to have art where it should be — on a pedestal for people to appreciate and access,” Bill said.
Bill had followed Daniel’s work for some time, and when the pair met to discuss the possibility of an exhibition, they connected immediately.
“The art is incredible, but the relationship is incredible too. It’s all about trust,” he said.
Landscape by the Painter explores the aftermath of bushfires through striking depictions of gum trees scarred by fire, revealing the beauty that can emerge from disaster. The series continues through scenes of regrowth, capturing the dense, lush Australian bush with such depth and texture that viewers feel as though they could step straight into it.
The exhibition also highlights Daniel’s passion for paint and his expressive application of it, using traditional techniques with a brush, paint and even pieces of cardboard in hand.
The owners of Campaspe Mill Gallery said they were proud to present the remarkable exhibition as the gallery’s first major showcase.
The Gallery at Campaspe Mill Distillery is located at 2 Wards Lane, Kyneton.
