Castlemaine Football Netball Club hosted a bumper weekend of football and netball competition at the Camp Reserve last weekend.
The action kicked off Friday evening with the Magpies Senior Women’s Football side and Under 18 Girls sides playing host to Eaglehawk and Kangaroo Flat under lights.
The 18 Girls were first up and were thrilled to secure a 14-point win against a determined Roos outfit.
Best for the young Magpies were Olivia Muscat, Rhani Evans, Kate Batchelor, Isobelle Pratt, Kirah Muscat and Ava Bartlett who booted 3 goals.
The side is currently in seventh spot.
The Magpie Senior Women were also in fine form. They opened the match with four goals to the Hawks’ 3 points and steadily built their tally across the remaining four quarters breezing to a 62-point win.
Tiahna Cochrane booted five goals and Mikaela Trethowan bagged four. Other top contributors were Paynton Jolliffe, Eillish Cumming, Alice D’Arcy and Jemma Finning.
The win sees Castlemaine sitting in second spot trailing Golden Square on percentage.
On Saturday, the Castlemaine FNC sides welcomed Eaglehawk FC to the Camp for round 16 of the Bendigo Football Netball League season.
The Seniors made a promising start getting their first on the board off the boot of Ben McConachy, followed by two more before the Hawks snatched one back via Oscar White.
At quarter-time the Magpies led by 14 points.
Castlemaine opened the second term with another goal to Harrison Sheahan. But after that the Hawks took control and booted five more to turn the tables and hold a 12-point advantage at half-time.
Riley Pedretti pegged two back for the home side early in the third term and when Jacob Bauer added a third the Magpies looked threatening. But the Hawks rallied kicking two more, before Bailey Henderson grabbed a fourth for the Magpies.
The visitors replied with another goal to Nick Thompson in the dying stages to see them holding a slender seven-point lead at the final change.
Thompson bagged another in the opening minutes of the fourth term, but Sheahan soon found another for the Pies.
But the Hawks continued to push and were able to find that something extra. They ran out the game strongly, kicking another three goals to eventually win by 29 points.
Best for the Magpies were Dylan Landt, Jaise Coleman, Jacob Bauer, William Marks, Harrison Sheahan and Harper Kneebone.
They will look to bounce back this weekend when they face off against BFNL newcomers Broadford.
In the Reserves, the Hawks got the jump on the Magpies and led at every change. To their credit, the home side fought their way back into the match in the final term, kicking three goals to the Hawks’ one, but they couldn’t bridge the gap and eventually lost by 27 points.
Best were Jack Chester with 2 goals, Declan Slingo, Saxon Sieber-Hogg, Ashton Frankling, Brodie Browne-Kerr and Alec Staples.
The Magpie Under 18s dominated their clash from start to finish to eventually run out winners by an impressive 77 points.
Oliver Britt and Jack Archer led the way with 4 goals each. Other standouts were Oscar Giddings, Joshua Tull, Lueder De Podolinsky and Brian Shafik-Eid.
Netball
On the netball court, the Magpies A Grade 38 lost to Eaglehawk 68. A Reserve 30 lost to the Hawks 75. B Grade 31 lost to Eaglehawk 68. B Res 32 lost a close contest to the Hawks 56. 17 & Under 38 lost to Eaglehawk 68. 15 & Under 22 lost to Eaglehawk 58.
This weekend
This weekend, the Castlemaine FNC sides will hit the road for their first trip to Broadford FNC.
On Sunday, the Magpie Senior Women will also hit the road to take on Marong in round 18, while the Under 18 Girls will tackle top-of-the-table Woorinen.
