Woodend’s Honour Avenue road users have flagged safety concerns over ongoing flooded roadways during wet weather.
Residents are calling for a permanent drainage fix for a section of the road near Savages Lane that is often inundated with water during heavy rain.
Reduced speed and ‘water over road’ warning signs put out often do little to slow some drivers, residents say.
Last Wednesday’s rain saw one lane under water and drivers heading out of town had to navigate the road by crossing into the opposite lane during foggy conditions.
About three weeks earlier, residents had reported a similar situation. A road sign still lays on the roadside where two cars collided nearby Savages Lane.
Life-long Woodend resident Graham Davies said roadway flooding was frequent and resident concerns had not yet resulted in action.
“The water over the road has been a persistent problem for years,” Mr Davies said.
“Something needs to be done. It’s dangerous.”
Living nearby the problem area, Mr Davies and his neighbours frequently have water run off the roadway and through their properties as a result.
Honour Avenue is a road managed by the Department of Transport and Planning. A department spokesperson told the Express drainage works were being planned.
“The Avenue of Honour is a heritage site, which means a heritage impact assessment must take place before works can commence,” they said.
“This assessment has now been completed, so we’re getting on with planning for drainage works.
“Safety is our number one priority, and we continue to monitor the area as planning continues.”
