Riddells Creek Neighbourhood House has launched a Makers Cabinet — a dedicated space that showcases and sells handcrafted items created by local artisans.
The initiative is designed to support makers in the community by giving them greater visibility, while also encouraging residents to consider locally made, high-quality goods when purchasing gifts and special items.
The idea for the Makers Cabinet grew from ongoing conversations with participants in the weekly creative social groups.
“Many talented local makers expressed a desire for more opportunities to share their work with a broader audience,” said RCNH community engagement manager, Mary Giordano.
“While the group initially envisioned a larger makers expo, funding constraints led to development of a more permanent and accessible solution.”
With support from Bendigo Bank’s Community Enterprise branch in Gisborne, the group was able to install a glass display cabinet that now serves as a rotating showcase for local craftsmanship. The initiative is open to all makers in the wider Riddells Creek community, not just those who are connected to the groups programs.
The Makers Cabinet launched with work by local potter Galen Sartore, including a striking, handcrafted Egyptian-themed ceramic chess set, as well as a collection of whimsical ceramic houses.
The cabinet can be viewed at Riddells Creek Neighbourhood House – 59 Main Road, Riddells Creek – open Monday to Thursday from 9.30am to 3pm.
