The historic Malmsbury Railway Station was extensively damaged by fire last Wednesday evening, shutting down peak hour V/Line services on the Bendigo Line for several hours.
The blaze erupted about 5.30pm in the original station and station master’s residence, quickly spreading into the roof of the 1862 bluestone building.
Eight CFA brigades were supported by a Fire Rescue Victoria ladder platform that rushed from Bendigo.
Firefighters had to smash their way through the aged slate roof to attack the flames, the presence of asbestos requiring crews to undergo extensive decontamination.
No one was in the building at the time, investigators will now probe the cause of the fire.
