The final of the Ballarat Highlands men’s over 60s regional bowls championship last week was an all-Gisborne affair.

Played at Ballarat North Bowling Club, the match between Tim Rogers and Terry Kelly (s) and Vic Foxford and David Beardmore (s) attracted considerable interest.

And the contest was a fluctuating affair with prevailing gusty winds challenging the bowlers’ line throughout.

Rated by many as the favourites, Rogers-Kelly opened up a 6-2 lead after six ends only to see the resilient Foxford-Beardmore combination grab four shots on the tenth end to take the lead.

Buoyed with their position, Foxford-Beardmore maintained their composure to win three of the final five ends to secure a worthy 13-9 victory.

The women’s final between two Ballarat area pairs was won 13-0 by Jill Hopper and Debbie Gorin (Victoria Bowling Club) against the sister combination of Julia Holton and Elizabeth Kierce.

In one semi-final, the eventual winners edged out Gisborne’s Vicki Noble and Louise Ball (s) 14-13.

The men’s and women’s triples finals were played at Kyneton Bowling Club on Sunday.
