Wedgies face tough, contested football

Wet and wintry conditions set the tone at Woodend’s Racecourse Reserve on Sunday, as the Wedgies burst out of the blocks early before being challenged by a relentless Hawks outfit in a classic display of tough, contested football.

Despite the difficult conditions, Williams, Bennett, Button and Chadwick each contributed a goal, though the Eagles found it difficult to generate consistent forward entries throughout the day. Their task was made even harder after the loss of star midfielder Teagan Ainslie in the opening quarter.

New recruit Barnett was a standout in the ruck, competing strongly all day against an experienced Metcalf from Eaglehawk, while experienced leader Hateley provided composure across half-back. Her ability to read the play and steady the defensive line proved crucial in keeping the Eagles in the contest.

In the end, it was a hard-fought encounter between two sides that will be vying for a finals spot at the pointy end of the season.

Wedge-Tailed Eagles 4.3.27 lost to Eaglehawk 5.6.36.

The Eagles will look to respond when they host White Hills this Sunday, May 10, at Racecourse Reserve, Woodend, with the first bounce at 1pm.
