Trentham climbed off the bottom of the Highlands division one pennant bowls ladder with an upset victory at Kyneton on Saturday.
After missing out by three shots against Diggers Rest in the previous round, Trentham lifted overall in the rain-interrupted fifth round encounter that hung in the balance throughout.
“It’s been a very long time since we’ve beaten Kyneton in the top grade,” one Trentham stalwart remarked after the match.
The longer the match went, the more incentive Trentham generated.
Kyneton was without superstar skipper Greg Podesta (unavailable) and his absence gave the visitors renewed hope.
Bob Dobinson’s four was in good form for Trentham, winning by eight shots, while this season’s experienced newcomer David Andueza showed his class for Kyneton.
TWO SHOTS TO SPARE
Reigning premier Romsey was pleased to escape with a 58-56 victory at home to a talented Kilmore combination.
Aaron Young’s crew led the way with six shots up against Ray Jansen.
Gisborne, also unbeaten, had all rinks up in a 19-shot victory at home to third-placed Kyneton Golf.
Lancefield failed to fire at Broadford, going down 58-42 but still hanging on to fourth spot on the ladder.
In the remaining top division encounter, Woodend adapted to the Diggers Rest surface to win by 10 shots, with Steve Pickles rink in fine form.
The scheduled Kyneton Golf versus Woodend division two match was the only one washed out, as players at different venues found ways to avoid intermittent rain.
Biggest winning margin was 66 shots as Kilmore overpowered a Mt Cottrell lineup with only nine players.
Current ladders positions in division one are:
Gisborne 78 pts, Romsey 76, Kyneton Golf 42, Lancefield 40, Kilmore 36, Broadford 34, Woodend 32, Diggers Rest 27, Trentham 18, Kyneton 17.
