Kyneton and Kyneton Golf both won their Highlands division one bowls matches in contrasting circumstances in cold conditions on Saturday.
Reigning premier Kyneton totally outplayed Romsey in a replay of last season’s grand final, while Golf surprisingly struggled at home to Diggers Rest — finally winning by ONE shot!
Unpredictable heavy rain had an impact largely in the southern area, but the only division one match washed out was Trentham versus Gisborne, with each side gaining eight points.
At Romsey, the two combatants were without their current club champions in Aaron Young and Greg Podesta.
Terry Kelly stepped up as skipper for Kyneton and had a big win, as did Anthony Mathison.
Glen Marshall’s four was in contention for Romsey until the final end, but the overall outcome was an all fours up 46 shots victory for the visitors.
The Kyneton Golf v Diggers Rest match was an absolute thriller, with all fours close, and Golf relieved to finally scramble home 53-52.
Third-placed Kilmore outplayed Lancefield to win by 35 shots at home, and Broadford moved into fifth spot by downing Woodend by 20 shots. Norm Bickerdyke’s four prevented a clean sweep.
Current ladder: Kyneton 92 points, Kyneton Golf 88, Kilmore 62, Gisborne 48, Broadford 47, Romsey 42, Woodend 34, Diggers Rest 34, Trentham 25, Lancefield 8.
There was one unplayed match (rain) in second division, and three in third division.
