The work of more than 150 local artists is on display in Castlemaine’s historic Market Building as part of the winter season Market Building Art exhibition.
Mount Alexander Shire Council’s team leader of visitor services, Aileen Walsh, said the exhibition had a range of paintings, sculpture, jewellery, glassware, prints, photography, textiles and more.
“These exhibitions beautifully showcase the diversity of artwork being produced in our shire. We have works from established artists and those just starting out, so it’s a really broad representation from the entire community,” Ms Walsh said.
In the depth of winter, the works have brightened up the Market Building.
“All works are for sale. Visitors love taking home a piece of art as a souvenir and knowing that they are supporting our creative community,” Ms Walsh said.
“Locals also love having local artwork in their homes, so it’s a good time for shopping.
“If you’re in Mostyn Street call in to take a look and feel free to have a chat to some of our friendly volunteers at the Visitor Information Centre.”
Local artist Lorraine Le Plastrier is delighted to have two works in the exhibition.
The works of birdlife and Pindan plants and grasses were inspired by a trip to the stunning East Roebuck Bay in Western Australia.
Lorraine said this year’s exhibition was the best she had seen.
“The quality and range of works is just outstanding, there is a surprise around every corner. It is a wonderful celebration of our incredibly talented community and a great place to spend an hour or two on a chilly winter day!” she said.
The Market Building Art exhibition is on until October 4.
The Market Building is located at 44 Mostyn Street, Castlemaine and is open every day from 9am to 5pm.
The exhibition is supported by Mount Alexander Shire Council to showcase the shire’s cultural and artistic community.
