Gisborne-Kyneton United claimed victory against Sunbury Kangaroos on the weekend in round two of the EDFL women’s competition.

The siren had both teams coming out of the blocks hard, and GKU’s defence worked tirelessly to ensure the Kangaroos didn’t get a head start in the match.

GKU welcomed back key defenders Stephanie Brancatisano, Charlie Bracey and Shannon White, who joined reliable backliners Lucy Lenius and Skye Sinclair. Together, they were able to keep the Kangaroos goalless by the end of the first quarter.

GKU coaches Bernie Marintelli and Phil Hawkes shuffled the magnets to open up the forward line, positioning key forward Kareena Jacobsen-Logan in the goal square to try and break the game open in the second quarter. The move paid off almost instantly, with Jacobsen-Logan snagging a couple of goals with ease.

The Kangaroos pushed back and managed to score a goal of their own, but Jacobsen-Logan was unstoppable up forward, dominating with five goals to her name by half-time. GKU’s defence continued to stand strong throughout the match, holding Sunbury to just 2.1 (13). Brooke Cowan was the other goal scorer for GKU.

Gibson, Todorovic and Macumber worked tirelessly in the midfield and were named among GKU’s best, while Hateley continues to step up as a reliable ruck and key position player.
