Magpie footballers win four from four

The Castlemaine Magpies made the trek to Dower Park on Saturday to tackle Kangaroo Flat and recorded their second win of the year. The win places Castlemaine in fourth spot on the Bendigo Football Netball League ladder.

Flat got the jump on the Magpies early with goals to Nicholas Keogh 2 and Jake Hywood, before Magpie coach Michael Hartley slotted through their first.

Flat found a reply through Sam Barnes, before Ryan Eyre snapped another for the Magpies to bridge the gap to nine points at quarter-time.

The second term was tight tussle with both sides kicking two goals apiece. At half-time Kangaroo Flat held a 10-point buffer.

Castlemaine pulled out all the stops in the third term kicking a massive eight goals, with Matthew Filo and Brodie Browne-Kerr leading the charge while holding the Flat to just one to nab a 37-point lead at the final change.

The Roos returned fire with a goal to Nicholas Lang minutes into the last quarter, he soon found a second before Michael Hartley slotted through another for the visitors.

Flat kicked two more, before Magpie young gun Archie Rixon kicked another.

The Roos Jake Hywood goaled before the siren but Castlemaine held on to win by 21 points.

Best were Harrison Sheahan, Ryan Eyre, Michael Hartley, Liam Wilkinson, Brodie Browne-Kerr and Darby Semmens.

The Reserves also won their clash by 58 points. The Magpies held a one-point lead after an even first term but led at every change to win by comfortable margin.

Best for the Magpies were Declan Slingo, Bodhi Robinson, Bradley Keogh, Ben McConachy and Campbell McLennan.

The Under 18s also had a fantastic win over the Roos to the tune of 37 points. Best for the Magpies were Mitchell McKnight, Oscar Giddings, Gabriel O’Sullivan, Logan Browne-Kerr, Saxon Sieber-Hogg and Benjamin Jardine.

WOMEN’S FOOTBALL

The Women had a massive 185-point win over the Bendigo Thunder. The side opened the match with an eight-goal haul in the first term and went on with the job to run out convincing winners. Best on were Tiahna Cochrane, Jemma Finning and Tia Davidge.

NETBALL

On the neball court, A Reserve 34 lost to Kangaroo Flat 74. Best on was Rachelle McLean. B Grade 40 lost to Flat 66 in a close battle. Best on was Charli Henderson.

B Reserve 11 had a tough day out against Flat 87. Best on was Charley Pedretti.

The Under 17s also lost a close contest 29-41. Best on was Ella Rixon.

This weekend the Castlemaine sides will host South Bendigo at Camp Reserve, while the women’s football side will enjoy a week’s rest before they host White Hills at the Camp on Mother’s Day.
